Apartments for rent in old buildings: affordable, prices
An apartment in an old building is most often chosen for the location: work, school, transport close by. The monthly rent is usually lower than in a new building on the same street, but you can give the difference back in winter. Ask about heating: is there a combi boiler or will you have to manage with an electric heater?

289 listings for monthly rent have been posted in old buildings. The floor filter is especially useful here: in a building without an elevator, a top floor is hard for families with children and older people. The "Furnished" filter picks out furnished apartments.
Why do people rent apartments in old buildings?
The main reasons are price and location. Old buildings stand in long-established parts of the city: a school, a market and the metro are close, and the monthly rent is often lower. Stalinkas have high ceilings and thick walls. But there may be no elevator, and it is hard to find a parking space in the yard.
What about heating and utilities in old buildings?
It depends on the building. In some, central heating still works, but in most the owners have installed an individual combi boiler. If there is no combi and the rooms have to be heated with electric heaters, the electricity bill will rise noticeably in winter. Old windows hold heat poorly, so ask the owner to show last winter's gas and electricity receipts.
How do I judge the condition of the renovation in an old building?
At the viewing, turn on the taps and pay attention to water pressure and noise in the pipes. Stains on the ceiling, especially on the top floor and above the bathroom, point to a leaking roof or neighbors upstairs. Ask whether the wiring is old aluminum: that line gets overloaded when an air conditioner and a combi boiler run at the same time. Trust what you see, not the photos.
How do the contract and deposit work when renting an apartment in an old building?
With a written contract: it should have the monthly amount, the payment day and how the deposit is returned. Record the flaws of an old apartment, such as cracked tile, a broken socket, damage to old furniture, with photos at move-in. Otherwise they may be deducted from the deposit when you leave. Also put in the contract when the owner can raise the rent.
